When I meet a dog for the first time, I want the appointment to feel calm, safe, and predictable. One part of that first introduction is understanding the dog’s basic health and vaccination history.
A grooming studio is different from a regular walk outside. Even when pets are scheduled individually and do not have direct contact with one another, they share the same environment, pass through common areas, and the groomer works with different animals throughout the day. That is why hygiene and disease prevention are an important part of professional pet care.
Why vaccination records matter
A vaccination certificate or veterinary record helps confirm that important preventive care is up to date.
Rabies vaccination is especially important. In Illinois, dogs four months of age and older are required to be vaccinated against rabies according to state law.
Rabies is not simply a routine vaccine. It is a serious disease that matters for both animal health and public safety. If an unexpected situation or bite occurs during grooming, knowing a dog’s current rabies vaccination status can be very important.
Vaccination history can also help owners and pet professionals better understand other infectious-disease risks. Recommendations for specific vaccines can depend on a dog’s age, health, lifestyle, and how often the dog is exposed to other animals.
Dogs that visit grooming facilities, boarding facilities, daycare, training classes, dog shows, or frequently interact with other dogs may have different exposure risks than dogs that spend most of their time at home.
This does not mean the groomer decides which vaccines your dog needs
A groomer does not diagnose illnesses or determine a vaccination schedule.
That decision belongs to the dog owner and veterinarian.
My responsibility is simply to know about important health or safety information that may affect the grooming appointment. If a dog has a medical exemption, a special vaccination schedule, or another health condition, the owner can let me know in advance.
Why I ask at the first appointment
The first grooming visit is when I learn the most about a new dog: temperament, coat and skin condition, previous grooming experience, sensitivity to certain procedures, and health-related information that may affect the appointment.
Vaccination information is just one small part of that first introduction.
For me, good grooming is not only about a beautiful haircut. It is about caring for the whole pet responsibly, with attention to comfort, health, and safety.

Why I Ask for Vaccination Records Before a Dog’s First Grooming Appointment
Before a first grooming appointment, I may ask to see your dog’s vaccination record. This is not about making the visit more complicated — it is about protecting your dog, other pets, and everyone who works closely with animals.
